Part 01 · The Interface

The interface is a condition, not a place on a map.

You're in the WUI if fire in nearby vegetation can reach your home by flame, radiant heat, or wind-carried embers. That includes classic forest-edge properties, and it includes suburban streets with continuous fences, hedges and mulch beds connecting house to house.

The decisive mechanism is rarely a wall of flame: wind lofts burning fragments miles ahead of a fire, and they collect exactly where homes are receptive. Most losses begin quietly, at one of five predictable points, which means most losses are preventable at those same points.

Part 02 · Defensible Space

Work outward from the walls, zone by zone, by the numbers.

The home ignition zone is measured from the structure, not from the property line. Each zone has a different job.

Zone 00 to 5 ft

Noncombustible. No exceptions.

  • Gravel or stone, never bark mulch
  • Nothing combustible against the walls
  • Gutters clean, vents screened
Zone 15 to 30 ft

Lean, clean and green.

  • Irrigated island plantings, never continuous hedges
  • Grass mowed under four inches
  • 10 ft between shrub groups
Zone 230 to 100 ft

Reduce and separate. Do not clear-cut.

  • Crowns 10 ft or more apart
  • Conifers limbed up 6 to 10 ft
  • Ladder fuels removed
Non-negotiables, every season
  • Nothing combustible in the first five feet
  • Gutters, valleys and under-deck cleaned seasonally
  • Dead and dying material removed
  • Emergency access kept clear
Part 03 · Hardening the Structure

The structure is part of the fuel, harden every entry point.

Gutters

Metal guards plus a seasonal cleanout of gutters, valleys and roof field.

Vents

Ember-resistant rated mesh on every vent, per current WUI standards.

Roof

Class A assembly, kept clear of needle and leaf accumulation.

Decks

Deny the underside. Skirt, screen and keep the space beneath clean.

Walls & base

Six inches of noncombustible ground clearance at the base of every wall.

Glazing

Tempered dual-pane glass with metal screens on exposed elevations.
